Full-time in Stockholm
Katla designs, develops and manufactures unconventional composite VTOL drones – completely in-house. We are currently a team of 20 people, mainly in development, and work practically with short iteration cycles: we design, build, test and fly in rapid succession – giving you the chance to see your work in the air shortly after it is drawn.
Katla has been developing and flying drones for almost ten years. Our philosophy is to build systems that are efficient yet simple, with high performance, reliability and robustness. As in all aviation operations, safety is always the top priority.
The role
As an Aircraft Design Engineer, you will be heavily involved in shaping the architecture and structural integrity of our current and future vehicles. Among other things, you will:
- Own and contribute across the full design cycle, from initial concept and sizing to finished product.
- Design and develop a wide range of aircraft structures and components, spanning from the primary airframe (fuselage, wings) to integration elements like mounts, equipment racks, doors, and mechanisms.
- Perform packaging and integration of complex systems, including avionics, propulsion, and payloads.
- Manage aircraft weight throughout the design phase.
- Create detailed 3D CAD models, assemblies, and engineering drawings.
- Produce complete manufacturing documentation and Bills of Materials (BOMs).
- Coordinate prototype manufacturing with internal and external stakeholders.
- Plan and perform structural and ground tests, including test documentation and reporting.
- Lead and contribute to design reviews, technical trade-offs and cross-functional decisions.
Who we are looking for
You are solution-oriented, structured and take responsibility for driving problems all the way from idea to working solution.
You must have:
- Aircraft Design Experience: 5+ years of professional experience in the aviation/aerospace industry. You must understand aircraft design principles, aviation safety standards, and lightweight engineering.
- CAD and Drawings: Expert-level proficiency in SolidWorks or similar CAD programs, including complex part and assembly modelling. You are comfortable creating clear, production-ready engineering drawings, including tolerances where appropriate.
- End-to-End Ownership: Demonstrated experience taking hardware from early concept and preliminary sizing through detailed design, manufacturing, assembly and test.
- System-Level Thinking: A solid understanding of how aerodynamics, structures, and systems interact in an aircraft.
Meritorious
It is a plus if you have experience in any of the following:
- Composite Design: Hands-on experience designing carbon fiber/composite parts for manufacturing processes.
- Surfacing / Lofting: Experience in generating Outer Mold Lines (OML) for aerodynamic surfaces.
- Structural simulation and sizing, for example using FEA.
- Structural test planning, instrumentation and correlation of test results with analysis.
- Configuration management, PDM/PLM systems and engineering release processes.
- Aviation regulations and certification processes, such as EASA CS-23, CS-27, SC-VTOL or FAA Part 23.
If you’re eager to work broadly, close to production, and help shape the future of aerial mobility, we’d love to hear from you.
Working at Katla
Katla is a growing company where roles develop together with the products and operations. You will work closely with both hardware, software, vehicles and flight operations and have the opportunity to influence how our systems are built and used.
For the right person, there are great opportunities to grow with the role, take on greater technical responsibility and develop further within the company.
